Working with T-shirt yarn, it is easiest to work with taller stitches. While I wanted this to be a very simple design, I also wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing. The kind of project that would add some colour and personality to the most frequented space (well, if you have young dependent children, it is the most frequented space) in the home.

This Kitchen Mat crochet pattern is pretty straightforward and fast (working with chunky t-shirt yarn usually is). You can follow the written pattern or just go straight with the chart, but you’d still have to follow parts of the written pattern for the last few rows. The only part you may find a bit of work is stringing the yarn to highlight the word on the mat, but that was so fun to do!

I love the style and personality it adds to my kitchen. The colours too add a cheeriness that has me just wanting to move it around so I can always stand on it.

Yarn

Hoooked Zpaghetti is a super bulky t-shirt yarn made from 90% recycled cotton and other materials. It is such a superb tshirt yarn to work with, creating many appealing designs and quick projects too.

It can be a bit tough to manipulate if your fingers are not comfortable working with heavier yarn weights. For ease, use a larger hook (unless you are particular about having a tight project), and flex your fingers/hands often.

If you are buying more than 1 ball of this yarn, please ensure that they are both the same size, I have seen 700gr and 850gr and have noticed some differences in the thickness of the yarn from both. I have experienced this the hard way. Nevertheless, I love working with this yarn, and I plan to make a giant rug some time with it.

I mentioned at the beginning that this pattern can be made with what you already have in your home, so if you’d rather not buy any yarn, and you have enough old t-shirts in your home, why not make your own t-shirt yarn? Use the amount of yarn for this pattern to measure how much you need and See the tutorial on How to Make T-shirt yarn
