Crocheted Fidget-Sensory Lapmat- Free Pattern

I present to you the second Fidget-Sensory lapmat crochet pattern by LoopinglyMade. I know that opening sounds archaic, but I have waited eagerly for weeks to share this new Fidget Lapmat pattern with you.

This time around, I have collaborated with AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns.com to bring you this thoughtfully designed fidget lapmat. If you have never heard of this site, then now you know it. It shares thousands of blanket designs from designers all over. You can list your designs and include the link to the pattern/your blog.

A couple of months after designing the first Fidget/Sensory Blanket for Alzheimers, I received a request to design a Fidget Blanket for AFCAP (All Free Crochet Afghan Patterns). I was elated because this would be a great avenue to get more crocheters involved in making Fidget blankets for people suffering from Alzheimers disease.

The first fidget blanket was such a success I made it my goal to create other variations every now and then. There is so much more heart involved when these blankets/ lapmats are handmade, and the comments and messages I received about them have been uplifting.

I took a lot of advice from feedback I received about the first Sensory blanket design. The aim this time was for a still simple but different design with seemingly fewer elements yet still functional.

From the photo below you can see all that is new to this blanket. The size is also a little smaller and sits nicely on the lap.

  • The sequined part is great for sensory activity.
  • The colourful strips have snap fasteners on them and aid in motor skills.
  • The D-ring and keyring may be a concentrated activity when the recipient tries to hook the key chain in the ring.
  • The buckles at the bottom are a simple addition to also aid motor skills by helping the recipient remember how to pull a buckle.

Brainstorming

I was inclined to use buttons and beads in this next design. However since I wanted this to be different, I had to brainstorm on what other elements would be functional. I must say it was a bit challenging to not use those buttons and beads but I do love the end result.
