C2C Crochet Bunny Baby Blanket- Free Pattern

It is such a huge relief to finally complete my first (actually, second) C2C crochet project. You’ll want to know what happened to the supposed first project.

This c2c crochet bunny blanket is so soft and cozy. It is also great for any gender, so don’t let the pink colours turn you off. Imagine it in a dark and light blue? purple and lilac? lime and lemon (I know those are not colour names, ha!)? It will make such a lovely welcome home gift.

The edging is a simple design. If it feels too ‘frilly’ for your liking, you can just make SCs around in the second round. However, I think it is subtle and perfect for both genders.

I can assure you this project will not take up a lot of time (especially if you are already familiar with the C2C technique), maybe you could complete it in 3 days. It took me a bit longer because of all the mistakes I was making. Should you want a bigger size, I’ve taken the time to make 2 extra charts in different sizes which you will find in the PDF.

What’ more, you can make this blanket a set. See the C2C Boxy Bunny Amigurumi or get the PDF set

For the longest time I’ve wanted to learn the corner to corner crochet technique. I was drawn to it because of the diverse, unlimited ways it could be used to create stunning and outstanding designs. And also to improve my crochet repertoire.

But as with learning new things, I approached it with trepidation. The more I looked at the c2c, the more it looked complicated a technique to try. Nevertheless, my fascination with it did not dim, and I think that strengthened my resolve take it up. Just look at all the wonderful designs from Sarah at Repeatcrafterme and also from Jess at Make and Do Crew. Did you know they have published books on C2C too?

Resources

Of course, being new to the corner to corner crochet technique, I
needed help. Two video tutorials that helped were from The Crochet Crowd and Bella Coco, where she shows how to make a c2c rectangle. These tutorials helped me kick off on this c2c adventure (yes, it is a delightful adventure).

As I mentioned above, this was going to be my 2nd corner to corner crochet design. The first one I started with got away from me. I made a rectangle with two colours for a shrug, but it did not shape out like I envisaged. I am still thinking of a way to salvage it because I refuse to *frog it ( *slang used by crocheters to describe unravelling a project that isn’t quite right).

Newbie Mistakes

Since I’m new to the C2C crochet technique, I hit some snag along the way and would like to share them as they might be useful to another newbie out there.

  • Colour changing was a bit daunting. I fumbled a lot the first 2 rows of colour changing. Maybe I was not carrying the yarn well, but I quickly figured out if the next block began with a contrast colour, it was best to finish the previous block with the working colour, then make the slip stitch into the next block with the contrast colour. Maybe if I had watched a video on colour changing it would have been easier. I learnt it the hard way! haha.
  • Mental preparedness. Many times I had to frog the project because I got distracted a lot with the number of blocks to work in each colour. Maybe because I sketched the intial design on graph paper. I always ended up with one colour more thatn the required number of blocks.
  • Positioning. Let me just say again, I frogged this project a lot. Towards, the middle, I started viewing the project from the vertical side, but on paper I was viewing it horizontally (to say I got confused is an understatement). I unravelled this project more times than I can count before finally realising I was actually doing the right thing all along but viewing it from a different angle. I laughed real hard at myself. But lesson learned!

The Yarn:

The yarn used in this pattern is the Himalaya Dolphin Baby. It is Super Bulky, medium 6 yarn. Made from 100% polyester, has a velvety look and is oh so heavenly! soft. However, it does not work well being ‘carried’. It will always poke through the stitches so one has to work with 2 balls at different angles of the pattern and also make the stitching a little tighter for when you have to change to a contrast colour.

You could also work with 1 ball at a time from 2 angles- the center and outside. I did this and it helped with controlling the yarn.

Yarn Substitutes:

I found 2 yarns with the same fiber composition as the Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn. The Bernat Baby Blanket Big ball– this is a really big ball and you’ll probably only need the 2-4 balls if you’re doing the same size as this pattern. Then there’s the Lion Brand Vel Luxe yarn,  same fiber content, same look, ONLY, this is in worsted weight, medium 4.

Finished measurement (after edging):

The blanket size in this pattern is 39.5″ tall by 30.5″ wide. This is a bit taller than the standard size for a stroller blanket, but will work just fine as well. In the PDF two other charts are included for Receiving and Crib blankets.

Gauge: 1 Block is approx. 1 inch

You’ll need:

  • 7 balls, medium 6, Super Bulky yarn. 5 balls in pink, 2 balls in Fuchsia. (In this pattern, Himalaya Dolphin Baby; 100g/3.5oz, 120mt/131yds
  • 6.5 mm hook ( even though I used this size, I strongly recommend using a lesser hook, say 6mm, to reduce the ‘spaciness’ in the blanket)
  • Needle to weave in ends

Note

-as always, pattern is written in U.S terms

-the written instruction is for the size in this pattern

Tip:
– When slip stitching to turn your row and make a new block, skip the first stitch, Slip Stitch in the 2 DCs and in the Chain 3 space. Then continue your work.
